Hot Topic # 4

Chapter 6 in the text and Sections 4 and 5 of the New Brunswick Education Act deal with issues related to Official Languages and Minority Language Education Rights (Section 23 of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms).

Each subsection of Section 23 further clarifies these rights:(Section 23(1) Intergenerational minority language rights; Section 23(2) the right to have the whole family educated in the same minority language; 23(3) the limits to the rights)

Section 29 of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms in relation to minority language education rights and constitutionally protected denominational schools defines and protects New Brunswick as the only officially bilingual province with a bilingual education system.

Why, in your opinion, are these protections important (or not important) for the school system in New Brunswick?
